Experienced Foreign Language instructor for more than 26 years with emphasis on training adult learners, in group and one-on-one settings/classes, including Chinese college students in China and the U.S. Foreign Service officers.
I generally follow consistent principles of student-centered, and communicative approach, including task-based. I also combined authentic materials and integrated technology into my classroom in multiple ways to improve teaching and learning. Usually I demonstrate and explain the key points on PPT by share screen on Zoom, removing language barriers, then I conduct language practices with different means. E.g. I use video, recording or learning apps to conduct error correction for students’ pronunciation issues and improve listening ability. I conduct vocab or grammar practice by poll, google form, or using word wall or Kahoot to do true or false and multiple choice exercises. In addition, I conduct role-play, interview, narration, debate by breakout room, most of those activities require interaction working in pairs or small groups, students have to use target language to engage in a communicative situation. In this way students take autonomy and are responsible for their learning process. My responsibility as a teacher is to facilitate and guide this learning process. More importantly, I am always aware of different learning styles of the students, so I will be flexible and adaptable to adjust my teaching approaches and techniques according to students’ individual learning styles and needs.
